CHAPTER 10

ARRAN

Arran was restless, lifting things up and putting them back down again while looking out the window every few moments. Lola had been gone for hours, since she’d gone to call her father. He tutted to himself and looked at some dusty old documents that no longer seemed as important as they once had.

Their last conversation had gone badly, and Arran was sure it had been his fault again. Those old fears and doubts had stopped him from saying what he’d really wanted to say. Would he have one last chance to speak from the heart before she left? And if so, what would he say?

A sudden unwanted thought washed over him. He put down the screwdriver he’d been fiddling with and rushed out to the front of the property. A huge wave of relief hit him when he saw the rental car still sitting there, still stuck in the mud.

As he turned to go back to the castle, he saw a small figure coming down the hill towards him. Even at this distance, Arran could tell that Lola was lost in thought and hadn’t seen him.

His first, irrational impulse was to hide from her. He looked at the cabin and imagined locking himself in there while waiting silently for Lola to go away. It was the easiest option and gave him the lowest possibility of his heart being broken.

The decision was almost taken when Lola appeared at his side.

“We need to talk.”

The couple sat at opposite ends of the long dining room table. It was how they’d become used to eating in the last week, but somehow the distance between them seemed far greater today than it had been on the other days, when they’d had fun sliding the salt cellar over the long table and making their voices echo as they shouted happily at each other before coming closer together at the end of the meal.

“My father has booked me on a flight for tomorrow morning.”

“Congratulations.”

“It’s not the time be sarcastic.”

“So what’s it the time for? To complain about fate? To wish I’d been born in Texas or that you’d grown up eating haggis by the loch?”

“I wish I had.”

“Then you wouldn’t be the same person you are now, Lola. Our different paths have made us the people were are now, and fate brought us together but is going to separate us again. That’s just how life works.”

“I don’t believe in fate.”

“Then you don’t believe it was fate that caused your wee car to get stuck in my mud?”

“That was my garbage American driving skills, remember?”

“Then why couldn’t my superior Scottish driving skills get it out?”

He saw a small smile creep onto her face, just as he’d hoped for.

“I guess that will remain a mystery, just like whether kelpies really exist.”

“It was fate, Lola. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred I’d have shifted that car out of the mud at the first attempt. And kelpies do exist, unlike your Hollywood mermaids.”

“I actually thought you’d maybe stuck it deeper into the mud on purpose.
